Good Morning Year 1,
Hope you had a lovely weekend and that you are ready to get back into your home learning!
We just wanted to take this opportunity to direct you to a couple of websites offering reading materials that may be suitable for your child. It is so important that the children keep up with their reading in order to continue progressing. We hope these websites will help with that.
https://collins.co.uk/pages/big-cat-ebooks - This seems to be a fantastic resource. Follow the instructions on the webpage to sign up for free. It allows you access to reading books for every colour band.
Here are your activities for today…
Go onto the Phonics Play website. You can access this on a tablet using the address new.phonicsplay.co.uk username: march20 password: home
Click on phase 5 on the menu that appears at the left hand side of the screen. Practice phonemes and tricky words using ‘phonics flashcards speed trial’ and ‘tricky word trucks’. Then, play the ‘cheeky chimps’ game. Your phoneme to focus on today is mb. Practise writing mb. Can you think of any words that contain mb?
Here is a video you might want to use to introduce mb:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owEViBZZZGc (Geraldine the Giraffe always seems to be a hit with the children).
Practise reading and writing the following words that contain the mb phoneme.
Lamb, limb, thumb, comb, crumb, climb.
Now can you think of a sentence that contains at lease 2 of these kn words?
Today your focus will be on adjectives. Can you remember what an adjective is? Remember an adjective is a describing word.
Parents – We always encourage children to place adjectives before nouns when using them in their writing. For example, instead of saying ‘the cat is fluffy’, we would prefer them to say ‘the fluffy cat’. Please bear this in mind when helping them with their activity today.
Let’s start off with a game of adjective I spy. Think of an object that you can see and describe it using adjectives so that whoever you are playing with can guess what you are describing. E.g. I spy with my little eye something that is green … (Remember you will probably need to use more than one adjective for your partner to guess what you are describing).
In your activity today I have given you some things to describe. I have put an example of what to do on the worksheet.
Warm up –
Practise counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.
Recall number bonds to 10 – Here’s an idea for a game if you fancy doing something a little different to simple recall. Put ten small items in a bag. Ask somebody to pick out a handful of the objects. Count them. Now can you work out how many are left in the bag?
Recall number doubles – I have attached a board game to help you with this if you want to use it.
Main Activity –
Today you will be focusing on number halves.
Parents – Try to make this activity as practical as possible. Ask your child to get a certain number of objects. Then ask them to split them into two equal groups in order to determine what half of the number is. You could do this activity indoors or outdoors. You could even try to trick them. Say half of 6 is 4, can you prove it? This is great for their reasoning skills. Really encourage them to explain the mistake you have made.
If you would prefer to do this as a written activity we have attached a sheet for you to use. Use whichever method you prefer 😊
Once you have completed your activities have a go at ‘halves’ on Hit the Button.
