a Pathway to Success

Tuesday 12th May 2020

Good morning all, did you manage to stain your paper?  Don’t worry if not, we don’t need it till tomorrow.

Firstly, let’s start with our morning phonics and reading word recap, please go through all of your Phase 3 phoneme cards and revise your letter names if you need to learn these.

Mrs Carrs/Mrs Brennan’s:

Today we will look at some ‘blends’ that go at the beginning of a word but use three letters: squ/scr/thr/spl.  I thought that we could practise all of our initial blends for reading by playing ‘Buried Treasure’ on new phonics play website (password march 20/username ‘home’)-Phase 4 ccvc/ccv words-choose ‘set 1-7 with digraphs’-this has different words to yesterday.  Then you can read the comic: ‘The Lunchbox’ on  the website ‘phonicsplaycomics’.

Lastly, yesterday I challenged Mrs Balmer’s group to make a treasure chest picture or model and I wouldn’t want you to miss out on this fun activity so you might want to make your own treasure chest using an old cardboard box and fill it with your own treasures.  What could you decorate it with?  You could use some tin foil if you have some to add some shine to it.  Or you could draw a picture of a treasure chest if you prefer. Or finish off your island activity from yesterday.

Mrs Balmer’s/Miss Hathaway’s:

I thought that we could revise the Phase 3 phonemes that we have learnt now that we have looked at them all.  Please play ‘Buried Treasure’ on the new phonics play website (password march 20/username ‘home’)-Phase 3 and click on ‘revise all Phase 3’ at the bottom.  You could choose 1 specific phoneme to practise if there is one that you find particularly tricky as an extra activity if you wish.  I challenged Mrs Carr’s/Mrs Brennan’s group to design a treasure island yesterday so I thought that it might be nice for you to have a go at this today, but don’t make it into a treasure map, that’s for tomorrow!   You could try to label the items on your Island or finish off your treasure chest from yesterday if you did not manage to finish it.

Mathematics

Mrs Balmer/Miss Hathaway’s group:  This week we are revising the skills of being able to recognise all of the numbers to 20/putting them in the correct order/recognising missing numbers in the number line/ finding 1 more and 1 less than a number.  I have attached a sheet where you need to find the number that goes before (1 less) and the number that goes after (1 more) than a given number.  Use your number line to help you if you wish until you feel more confident.  Then, if you have time maybe play the number line ordering and missing number game or you could time yourself to see how quickly you can order the numbers 0-20?  Make sure that they are mixed up before you start!  If you feel that you need to work within 10 then please use your number cards instead of the sheet.

Mrs Carr’s/Mrs Brennan’s group:

Do you remember looking at odds and evens in class?  I remember that you looked at some very large numbers with Mrs Carr.  Today you need to use your knowledge of odds and evens and  counting in twos to solve some problems.  Please complete the attached sheet and you could also practise counting in twos whilst helping to pair up socks!

Have lots of fun, Mrs Balmer.
