The Industrial North
This topic builds on children’s knowledge and understanding of the United Kingdom and local area that was developed in Year 3. Throughout this topic, the children will gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past. It should inspire pupils’ curiosity of how countries and cities developed and moved towards the 21st century. Links will be made to cultures and civilisations prior to the industrial revolution and how process of change occurred.
The main focus of this topic is how cities and towns began to change across the country. They will use their knowledge of the geography of Britain to understand significant aspects of British history. They will explore revolutionary inventions and how the use of different machinery led to a shift in: employment, housing and education.
The impact of change is studied through art & design projects based around the work of local artist L S Lowry and architect Joseph Paxton known for designing the Crystal Palace for the Great Exhibition of 1851.

Groovy Greeks
This topic builds on children’s knowledge of Europe and ancient civilisations already studied earlier in the juniors and in this academic year.
Year 5 will delve back in time to one of the most fascinating civilizations in history as they explore Ancient Greece and its many wonders. Through this topic, our class will discover the people, the inventions, the art, the technology and the mythology of the Ancient Greeks.
They will discover many of the Greek’s earliest achievements through the analysis of historical sources and how these have influenced the western world. This topic will span decades, processing the change and comparing the diversity of societies between ancient and modern Greece.
In Art and Design, linked to their study of the early Olympic Games, children study how movement is shown in sculpture through focussing on the Discus Thrower by Myron which leads to their own work in clay depicting a human figure showing movement.
