Mexico and The Maya
During this topic the children will extend their geographical knowledge and understanding beyond the United Kingdom and Europe to focus on North and South America, primarily Mexico. The children will look at the most significant human and physical features of Mexico, whilst further developing their ability to use a variety of maps.
The children will identify the position and significance of latitude, longitude, Equator, Northern Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere, the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, Arctic and Antarctic Circle, the Prime/Greenwich Meridian and time zones (including day and night)
Following on from the work already covered in Key Stage 2 where the children have developed their understanding of early civilisations the children will begin to broaden and deepen their historical understanding by studying a non-European society – Mayan civilization c AD 900.
During this topic the children will use a variety of secondary sources to develop their knowledge of the past. These sources will help the children to address and devise historically valid questions about change, cause, similarity and difference, and significance.
During our art lessons the children will look at the work of the Mexican artists Diego Rivera and Frida Karlo to develop their understanding of cubism, realism and surrealism, showing elements of these within their own portraits.
