This topic builds on children’s knowledge and understanding of the United Kingdom and local area that was developed in Year 3. Throughout this topic, the children will gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past. It should inspire pupils’ curiosity of how countries and cities developed and moved towards the 21st century. Links will be made to cultures and civilisations prior to the industrial revolution and how process of change occurred.
The main focus of this topic is how cities and towns began to change across the country. They will use their knowledge of the geography of Britain to understand significant aspects of British history. They will explore revolutionary inventions and how the use of different machinery led to a shift in: employment, housing and education.
The impact of change is studied through art & design projects based around the work of local artist L S Lowry and architect Joseph Paxton known for designing the Crystal Palace for the Great Exhibition of 1851.
